Saving for move-in costs

Often two to three times the monthly rent, before you get the keys.

5 min read

Moving in usually costs much more than one month's rent. Planning for it avoids putting the move on a credit card.

Typical upfront costs

  • First month's rent (sometimes last month's too)
  • Security deposit; limits vary by state
  • Application and screening fees
  • Moving costs: truck, helpers, boxes
  • Utility deposits or setup fees
  • Basics: bed, kitchen items, cleaning supplies
  • Renters insurance

Plan it

Add them up, divide by the months until you move, and save that amount each month in a separate account.
