Hi there,
This issue's tip: film your move-in
Before you unpack a single box, walk through the apartment with your phone recording. Open every cupboard, look at floors, walls, windows, the bathroom and the appliances. Say what you see. Then email the landlord a short list of any existing damage. It takes ten minutes and is your best protection at move-out.

One thing to check before you sign
Find the clause about breaking the lease early. Life changes, and knowing the cost in advance (a fee, finding a replacement tenant, or rent until the unit is re-let) helps you plan. See How to read your lease.
Reader question
"The landlord is out of the country and wants a deposit before I see the place. Is that normal?" No, that's a classic rental scam. Never pay before you've seen the apartment and signed a lease. See How to spot a rental scam.
