How to read your lease

The clauses that cost money if you miss them.

6 min read

A lease is a legal contract. Reading it carefully before you sign avoids surprises later.

Look for

  • Rent, due date, grace period and late fees
  • Lease length and what happens at the end
  • Notice needed before moving out
  • Rules for breaking the lease early
  • Who pays which utilities
  • Who handles repairs, and how to request them
  • Rules on guests, pets, subletting and alterations
  • Any fees beyond rent

Ask before signing

If something is unclear or was promised verbally, ask for it in writing. Keep a signed copy.
